Gert Wingård: Eleven houses

This summer the Swedish Museum of Architecture presents Gert Wingårdh’s wide-ranging activity. Here we can see - not just eleven buildings but also Wingårdh’s view of architecture. The exhibition presents eleven terms and how they are handled in different projects.

Concepts like desire, memory, nature, everyday and body are illuminated by means of various projects and buildings. The rectilinear VillAnn villa on Särö illustrates the importance of silence and simplicity, while the scheme for a sculpture museum in the German town of Marl addresses the issue of remembering nature, the place and architectural history.

The Architect

Gert Wingårdh started his practice in Gothenburg in 1977. Since then almost a thousand projects have seen the light of day: houses, offices, schools, apartment blocks, museums, laboratories – a wide spectrum from signage programmes to urban planning.

The early projects, such as Öijared Country Club and Villa Nilsson, introduced a rich variety of spatial experience, suggestive materials and outstandingly careful detailing. Recently the practice has completed several prestigious public commissions, such as the Swedish embassies in Berlin and Washington D.C., which have made the wealth of variation part of Sweden’s international persona. Wingårdh’s

Wingårdh’s architecture, and his communicative ability, have made him one of Sweden’s most widely noted architects and the office one of the largest and most successful.

The exhibition was originally produced at the Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg, in collaboration with the Wingårdh practice. Three more buildings have been added, taking the story back to the breakthrough Öijared Golf Club project and forward to the department store that has just opened in Vällingby.
