MIRALLES – Interpretations of an architect’s work. Photographs by David Bestué

David Bestué’s exhibition is about the Catalan architect Enric Miralles and his works. The architect’s practice was highly successful in the late 80s and the 90s, and his trail-blazing but not easily describable architecture also attracted international attention. Above all, it captured the interest of the media: all the articles, the special newspaper supplements, with photographs of Miralles’ buildings just after their completion, captivated David Bestué and provided a starting point for this project. Construction work had ended, but the buildings were empty, people had not yet moved in and begun using them.

Bestué himself says that he has tried to create a multiple portrait of Enric Miralles, a portrait showing his architectural output but also what is accommodated within it. To achieve this, Bestué has drawn on various channels: information flows, associates, the buildings and the people using them, who can really be said to have a close relationship with the architect. Bestué says that, not having studied architecture himself, his knowledge is insignificant. An academic, theoretical work about Miralles would have been beyond him. This also accounts for the title of the exhibition. Bestué presents a view or study of the architect’s work, but his is necessarily an incomplete, subjective interpretation. Information is lacking here, but only the other hand personal views and aspects are included which otherwise for the most part are not brought out by conventional studies.
